yā ayyuhal-muddaṡṡir
O YOU ENFOLDED in your mantle (of reform)
qum fa anżir
Arise and warn
wa rabbaka fa kabbir
Glorify your Lord
wa ṡiyābaka fa ṭahhir
Purify your inner self
war-rujza fahjur
And banish all trepidation.
wa lā tamnun tastakṡir
Do not bestow favours in expectation of return
wa lirabbika faṣbir
And persevere in the way of your Lord.
fa iżā nuqira fin-nāqụr
For when the trumpet blows
fa żālika yauma`iżiy yaumun 'asīr
It will be a day of distress
'alal-kāfirīna gairu yasīr
Dolorous for the unbelievers.
żarnī wa man khalaqtu waḥīdā
Leave him to Me whom I created alone
wa ja'altu lahụ mālam mamdụdā
And gave him abundant wealth
wa banīna syuhụdā
And sons always present by his side
wa mahhattu lahụ tamhīdā
And made things easy for them.
ṡumma yaṭma'u an azīd
Yet he wants that I should give him more.
kallā, innahụ kāna li`āyātinā 'anīdā
Never. He is refractory of Our signs.
sa`ur-hiquhụ ṣa'ụdā
I shall inflict on him hardship
innahụ fakkara wa qaddar
For he had thought and calculated.
fa qutila kaifa qaddar
May he be accursed how he planned!
ṡumma qutila kaifa qaddar
May be then be accursed how he plotted!
ṡumma naẓar
Then he looked around
ṡumma 'abasa wa basar
And frowned and puckered his brow
ṡumma adbara wastakbar
Then turned his back and waxed proud
fa qāla in hāżā illā siḥruy yu`ṡar
And said: "This is nothing but the magic of old
in hāżā illā qaulul-basyar
Nothing more than the speech of a man!"
sa`uṣlīhi saqar
I will cast him into the fire of Hell.
wa mā adrāka mā saqar
What do you think Hell-fire is?
lā tubqī wa lā tażar
It leaves nothing nor does it spare;
lawwāḥatul lil-basyar
It glows and burns the skin.
'alaihā tis'ata 'asyar
Over it are nineteen (guards).
wa mā ja'alnā aṣ-ḥāban-nāri illā malā`ikataw wa mā ja'alnā 'iddatahum illā fitnatal lillażīna kafarụ liyastaiqinallażīna ụtul-kitāba wa yazdādallażīna āmanū īmānaw wa lā yartāballażīna ụtul-kitāba wal-mu`minụna wa liyaqụlallażīna fī qulụbihim maraḍuw wal-kāfirụna māżā arādallāhu bihāżā maṡalā, każālika yuḍillullāhu may yasyā`u wa yahdī may yasyā`, wa mā ya'lamu junụda rabbika illā huw, wa mā hiya illā żikrā lil-basyar
We have not appointed any one but angels as keepers of Hell and their number that We have fixed is to make it a means of contention for disbelievers so that those who were given the Book may be certain and the faith of the believers may have greater increase and the people of the Book and believers may not be deceived and the sceptics and infidels may say: "What does God mean by this parable?" That is how God leads whosoever He will astray and guides whosoever He will. None knows the armies of your Lord save Him self. This is no more than reminder for mankind.
kallā wal-qamar
I say the truth and call the moon to witness
wal-laili iż adbar
And the night when on the wane
waṣ-ṣub-ḥi iżā asfar
The morning when it is unveiled
innahā la`iḥdal-kubar
That (Hell) is surely one of the greater (signs)
nażīral lil-basyar
A warning for people --
liman syā`a mingkum ay yataqaddama au yata`akhkhar
Whoever of you desires to progress or lag behind.
kullu nafsim bimā kasabat rahīnah
Every soul is pledged to what it does
illā aṣ-ḥābal-yamīn
Except those of the right hand
fī jannātiy yatasā`alụn
Sitting in the gardens asking
'anil-mujrimīn
Of evil-doers:
mā salakakum fī saqar
"What was it that brought you to Hell?"
qālụ lam naku minal-muṣallīn
They will answer: "We did not fulfil our devotional obligations
wa lam naku nuṭ'imul-miskīn
And did not feed the needy
wa kunnā nakhụḍu ma'al-khā`iḍīn
And plunged into useless things with those who were obstinate
wa kunnā nukażżibu biyaumid-dīn
And rejected the Day of Judgement as a lie
ḥattā atānal-yaqīn
Until the certainty (of death) had come upon us.
fa mā tanfa'uhum syafā'atusy-syāfi'īn
So the intercession of intercessors will not avail them.
fa mā lahum 'anit-tażkirati mu'riḍīn
Why then do they turn away from the admonition
ka`annahum ḥumurum mustanfirah
As though they were frightened asses
farrat ming qaswarah
Fleeing from a lion?
bal yurīdu kullumri`im min-hum ay yu`tā ṣuḥufam munasysyarah
In fact every one of them wants to be given open books (like the prophets).
kallā, bal lā yakhāfụnal-ākhirah
By no means. In fact they do not fear the Hereafter.
kallā innahụ tażkirah
Never so as this is a reminder.
fa man syā`a żakarah
Let him then who heeds remember it.
wa mā yażkurụna illā ay yasyā`allāh, huwa ahlut-taqwā wa ahlul-magfirah
But they will not remember except as God wills: He is worthy to be feared and He is worthy of forgiving
