اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ الَّذِيْٓ اَنْزَلَ عَلٰى عَبْدِهِ الْكِتٰبَ وَلَمْ يَجْعَلْ لَّهٗ عِوَجًا ۜ

al-ḥamdu lillāhillażī anzala 'alā 'abdihil-kitāba wa lam yaj'al lahụ 'iwajā

ALL PRAISE BE to God who has revealed to His votary the Book which is free of all obliquity

قَيِّمًا لِّيُنْذِرَ بَأْسًا شَدِيْدًا مِّنْ لَّدُنْهُ وَيُبَشِّرَ الْمُؤْمِنِيْنَ الَّذِيْنَ يَعْمَلُوْنَ الصّٰلِحٰتِ اَنَّ لَهُمْ اَجْرًا حَسَنًاۙ

qayyimal liyunżira ba`san syadīdam mil ladun-hu wa yubasysyiral-mu`minīnallażīna ya'malụnaṣ-ṣāliḥāti anna lahum ajran ḥasanā

Immutable so that it may warn of a severe punishment from Him; and give happy tidings to those who believe and do the right that there is a better reward (of Paradise) for them

مَّاكِثِيْنَ فِيْهِ اَبَدًاۙ

mākiṡīna fīhi abadā

Where they will abide for ever;

وَّيُنْذِرَ الَّذِيْنَ قَالُوا اتَّخَذَ اللّٰهُ وَلَدًاۖ

wa yunżirallażīna qāluttakhażallāhu waladā

And that it may warn those who say: "God has begotten a son."

مَّا لَهُمْ بِهٖ مِنْ عِلْمٍ وَّلَا لِاٰبَاۤىِٕهِمْۗ كَبُرَتْ كَلِمَةً تَخْرُجُ مِنْ اَفْوَاهِهِمْۗ اِنْ يَّقُوْلُوْنَ اِلَّا كَذِبًا

mā lahum bihī min 'ilmiw wa lā li`ābā`ihim, kaburat kalimatan takhruju min afwāhihim, iy yaqụlụna illā każibā

They have no knowledge of this as their fathers did not have. How terrible are the words they utter! They speak nothing but lies.

فَلَعَلَّكَ بَاخِعٌ نَّفْسَكَ عَلٰٓى اٰثَارِهِمْ اِنْ لَّمْ يُؤْمِنُوْا بِهٰذَا الْحَدِيْثِ اَسَفًا

fa la'allaka bākhi'un nafsaka 'alā āṡārihim il lam yu`minụ bihāżal-ḥadīṡi asafā

Will you kill yourself for grief of them if they do not believe in this presentation?

اِنَّا جَعَلْنَا مَا عَلَى الْاَرْضِ زِيْنَةً لَّهَا لِنَبْلُوَهُمْ اَيُّهُمْ اَحْسَنُ عَمَلًا

innā ja'alnā mā 'alal-arḍi zīnatal lahā linabluwahum ayyuhum aḥsanu 'amalā

We have made whatever exists on the earth its adornment to test and try them (and) know who acts better;

وَاِنَّا لَجَاعِلُوْنَ مَا عَلَيْهَا صَعِيْدًا جُرُزًاۗ

wa innā lajā'ilụna mā 'alaihā ṣa'īdan juruzā

For We shall certainly turn it to barren dust.

اَمْ حَسِبْتَ اَنَّ اَصْحٰبَ الْكَهْفِ وَالرَّقِيْمِ كَانُوْا مِنْ اٰيٰتِنَا عَجَبًا

am ḥasibta anna aṣ-ḥābal-kahfi war-raqīmi kānụ min āyātinā 'ajabā

Do you think the men of the cave and Ar-Raqim were so strange among Our signs?

اِذْ اَوَى الْفِتْيَةُ اِلَى الْكَهْفِ فَقَالُوْا رَبَّنَآ اٰتِنَا مِنْ لَّدُنْكَ رَحْمَةً وَّهَيِّئْ لَنَا مِنْ اَمْرِنَا رَشَدًا

iż awal-fityatu ilal-kahfi fa qālụ rabbanā ātinā mil ladungka raḥmataw wa hayyi` lanā min amrinā rasyadā

When those young men took shelter in the cave and prayed: "O Lord grant us Your favour and dispose our affair aright "

فَضَرَبْنَا عَلٰٓى اٰذَانِهِمْ فِى الْكَهْفِ سِنِيْنَ عَدَدًاۙ

fa ḍarabnā 'alā āżānihim fil-kahfi sinīna 'adadā

We sealed off their ears in the cave for a number of years

ثُمَّ بَعَثْنٰهُمْ لِنَعْلَمَ اَيُّ الْحِزْبَيْنِ اَحْصٰى لِمَا لَبِثُوْٓا اَمَدًا

ṡumma ba'aṡnāhum lina'lama ayyul-ḥizbaini aḥṣā limā labiṡū amadā

Then roused them to ascertain which of the two groups could account for the period they had stayed.

نَحْنُ نَقُصُّ عَلَيْكَ نَبَاَهُمْ بِالْحَقِّۗ اِنَّهُمْ فِتْيَةٌ اٰمَنُوْا بِرَبِّهِمْ وَزِدْنٰهُمْ هُدًىۖ

naḥnu naquṣṣu 'alaika naba`ahum bil-ḥaqq, innahum fityatun āmanụ birabbihim wa zidnāhum hudā

We narrate their story to you in all truth. They were a few young men who believed in their Lord; so We gave them greater guidance.

Number of Verses 110


وَّرَبَطْنَا عَلٰى قُلُوْبِهِمْ اِذْ قَامُوْا فَقَالُوْا رَبُّنَا رَبُّ السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالْاَرْضِ لَنْ نَّدْعُوَا۟ مِنْ دُوْنِهٖٓ اِلٰهًا لَّقَدْ قُلْنَآ اِذًا شَطَطًا

wa rabaṭnā 'alā qulụbihim iż qāmụ fa qālụ rabbunā rabbus-samāwāti wal-arḍi lan nad'uwa min dụnihī ilāhal laqad qulnā iżan syaṭaṭā

And strengthened their hearts when they stood up and said: "Our Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth. We shall invoke no god beside Him for we shall have uttered a blasphemy then.

هٰٓؤُلَاۤءِ قَوْمُنَا اتَّخَذُوْا مِنْ دُوْنِهٖٓ اٰلِهَةًۗ لَوْلَا يَأْتُوْنَ عَلَيْهِمْ بِسُلْطٰنٍۢ بَيِّنٍۗ فَمَنْ اَظْلَمُ مِمَّنِ افْتَرٰى عَلَى اللّٰهِ كَذِبًاۗ

hā`ulā`i qaumunattakhażụ min dụnihī ālihah, lau lā ya`tụna 'alaihim bisulṭānim bayyin, fa man aẓlamu mim maniftarā 'alallāhi każibā

As for these our people here they have taken to other gods apart from Him. Then why do they not bring a clear authority for them? Who is more wicked than he who fabricates a lie against God?"

وَاِذِ اعْتَزَلْتُمُوْهُمْ وَمَا يَعْبُدُوْنَ اِلَّا اللّٰهَ فَأْوٗٓا اِلَى الْكَهْفِ يَنْشُرْ لَكُمْ رَبُّكُمْ مِّنْ رَّحْمَتِهٖ وَيُهَيِّئْ لَكُمْ مِّنْ اَمْرِكُمْ مِّرْفَقًا

wa iżi'tazaltumụhum wa mā ya'budụna illallāha fa`wū ilal-kahfi yansyur lakum rabbukum mir raḥmatihī wa yuhayyi` lakum min amrikum mirfaqā

(And they said to each other:) "Now that you have withdrawn from them and what they worship beside God it is better to take refuge in the cave. Your Lord may bestow of His mercy on you and facilitate your affair."

۞ وَتَرَى الشَّمْسَ اِذَا طَلَعَتْ تَّزَاوَرُ عَنْ كَهْفِهِمْ ذَاتَ الْيَمِيْنِ وَاِذَا غَرَبَتْ تَّقْرِضُهُمْ ذَاتَ الشِّمَالِ وَهُمْ فِيْ فَجْوَةٍ مِّنْهُۗ ذٰلِكَ مِنْ اٰيٰتِ اللّٰهِ ۗمَنْ يَّهْدِ اللّٰهُ فَهُوَ الْمُهْتَدِ وَمَنْ يُّضْلِلْ فَلَنْ تَجِدَ لَهٗ وَلِيًّا مُّرْشِدًا

wa tarasy-syamsa iżā ṭala'at tazāwaru 'ang kahfihim żātal-yamīni wa iżā garabat taqriḍuhum żātasy-syimāli wa hum fī fajwatim min-h, żālika min āyātillāh, may yahdillāhu fa huwal-muhtadi wa may yuḍlil fa lan tajida lahụ waliyyam mursyidā

You may well have seen when the sun came up it moved away to the right of the cave and when it went down it turned away to the left and they stayed in its open space. This was among the signs of God. Whoever is guided by God follows the right path; and whosoever goes astray will not find a guide to show him the way.

وَتَحْسَبُهُمْ اَيْقَاظًا وَّهُمْ رُقُوْدٌ ۖوَّنُقَلِّبُهُمْ ذَاتَ الْيَمِيْنِ وَذَاتَ الشِّمَالِ ۖوَكَلْبُهُمْ بَاسِطٌ ذِرَاعَيْهِ بِالْوَصِيْدِۗ لَوِ اطَّلَعْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ لَوَلَّيْتَ مِنْهُمْ فِرَارًا وَّلَمُلِئْتَ مِنْهُمْ رُعْبًا

wa taḥsabuhum aiqāẓaw wa hum ruqụduw wa nuqallibuhum żātal-yamīni wa żātasy-syimāli wa kalbuhum bāsiṭun żirā'aihi bil-waṣīd, lawiṭṭala'ta 'alaihim lawallaita min-hum firāraw wa lamuli`ta min-hum ru'bā

You may have thought that they were awake yet they were asleep. We made them turn right and left while their dog lay with his forelegs stretched across the threshold. If you had looked at them you would have surely turned away and fled with horror at the sight.

وَكَذٰلِكَ بَعَثْنٰهُمْ لِيَتَسَاۤءَلُوْا بَيْنَهُمْۗ قَالَ قَاۤىِٕلٌ مِّنْهُمْ كَمْ لَبِثْتُمْۗ قَالُوْا لَبِثْنَا يَوْمًا اَوْ بَعْضَ يَوْمٍۗ قَالُوْا رَبُّكُمْ اَعْلَمُ بِمَا لَبِثْتُمْۗ فَابْعَثُوْٓا اَحَدَكُمْ بِوَرِقِكُمْ هٰذِهٖٓ اِلَى الْمَدِيْنَةِ فَلْيَنْظُرْ اَيُّهَآ اَزْكٰى طَعَامًا فَلْيَأْتِكُمْ بِرِزْقٍ مِّنْهُ وَلْيَتَلَطَّفْ وَلَا يُشْعِرَنَّ بِكُمْ اَحَدًا

wa każālika ba'aṡnāhum liyatasā`alụ bainahum, qāla qā`ilum min-hum kam labiṡtum, qālụ labiṡnā yauman au ba'ḍa yaụm, qālụ rabbukum a'lamu bimā labiṡtum, fab'aṡū aḥadakum biwariqikum hāżihī ilal-madīnati falyanẓur ayyuhā azkā ṭa'āman falya`tikum birizqim min-hu walyatalaṭṭaf wa lā yusy'iranna bikum aḥadā

Even so We roused them that they may question one another. One of them asked: "How long have you stayed here?" They said: "A day or less than a day." "Your Lord knows best " they said "how long you have stayed. So send one of you to the town with this money of yours to look for wholesome food and bring it for you; but he should be careful not to let your presence known.

اِنَّهُمْ اِنْ يَّظْهَرُوْا عَلَيْكُمْ يَرْجُمُوْكُمْ اَوْ يُعِيْدُوْكُمْ فِيْ مِلَّتِهِمْ وَلَنْ تُفْلِحُوْٓا اِذًا اَبَدًا

innahum iy yaẓ-harụ 'alaikum yarjumụkum au yu'īdụkum fī millatihim wa lan tufliḥū iżan abadā

If they come to know of you they will stone you to death or force you to go back to their creed; then you will never succeed."

وَكَذٰلِكَ اَعْثَرْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ لِيَعْلَمُوْٓا اَنَّ وَعْدَ اللّٰهِ حَقٌّ وَّاَنَّ السَّاعَةَ لَا رَيْبَ فِيْهَاۚ اِذْ يَتَنَازَعُوْنَ بَيْنَهُمْ اَمْرَهُمْ فَقَالُوا ابْنُوْا عَلَيْهِمْ بُنْيَانًاۗ رَبُّهُمْ اَعْلَمُ بِهِمْۗ قَالَ الَّذِيْنَ غَلَبُوْا عَلٰٓى اَمْرِهِمْ لَنَتَّخِذَنَّ عَلَيْهِمْ مَّسْجِدًا

wa każālika a'ṡarnā 'alaihim liya'lamū anna wa'dallāhi ḥaqquw wa annas-sā'ata lā raiba fīhā, iż yatanāza'ụna bainahum amrahum fa qālubnụ 'alaihim bun-yānā, rabbuhum a'lamu bihim, qālallażīna galabụ 'alā amrihim lanattakhiżanna 'alaihim masjidā

Thus did We inform the people about them that they may know the promise of God is TRUE and there is no doubt that the Hour will come. As they were arguing among themselves as to what should be done with them (some) said: "Erect a monument over them. Their Lord is best cognisant of them." Those who prevailed said: "We shall build a place of worship over their (sepulchre)."

سَيَقُوْلُوْنَ ثَلٰثَةٌ رَّابِعُهُمْ كَلْبُهُمْۚ وَيَقُوْلُوْنَ خَمْسَةٌ سَادِسُهُمْ كَلْبُهُمْ رَجْمًاۢ بِالْغَيْبِۚ وَيَقُوْلُوْنَ سَبْعَةٌ وَّثَامِنُهُمْ كَلْبُهُمْ ۗقُلْ رَّبِّيْٓ اَعْلَمُ بِعِدَّتِهِمْ مَّا يَعْلَمُهُمْ اِلَّا قَلِيْلٌ ەۗ فَلَا تُمَارِ فِيْهِمْ اِلَّا مِرَاۤءً ظَاهِرًا ۖوَّلَا تَسْتَفْتِ فِيْهِمْ مِّنْهُمْ اَحَدًا

sayaqụlụna ṡalāṡatur rābi'uhum kalbuhum, wa yaqụlụna khamsatun sādisuhum kalbuhum rajmam bil-gaīb, wa yaqụlụna sab'atuw wa ṡāminuhum kalbuhum, qur rabbī a'lamu bi'iddatihim mā ya'lamuhum illā qalīl, fa lā tumāri fīhim illā mirā`an ẓāhiraw wa lā tastafti fīhim min-hum aḥadā

Some will say: "They were three and their dog was the fourth;" and some will also say: "They were five and their dog was the sixth " -- guessing in the dark. And some will even say: "They were seven and their dog the eighth." Say: "My Lord alone knows best their number; none but only a few know of them." So do not argue about it with them but lightly and do not enquire about them from any one of them.

وَلَا تَقُوْلَنَّ لِشَا۟يْءٍ اِنِّيْ فَاعِلٌ ذٰلِكَ غَدًاۙ

wa lā taqụlanna lisyai`in innī fā'ilun żālika gadā

Do not say of any thing: "I will do it tomorrow "

اِلَّآ اَنْ يَّشَاۤءَ اللّٰهُ ۖوَاذْكُرْ رَّبَّكَ اِذَا نَسِيْتَ وَقُلْ عَسٰٓى اَنْ يَّهْدِيَنِ رَبِّيْ لِاَقْرَبَ مِنْ هٰذَا رَشَدًا

illā ay yasyā`allāhu ważkur rabbaka iżā nasīta wa qul 'asā ay yahdiyani rabbī li`aqraba min hāżā rasyadā

Without (adding) "if God may please;" and think of your Lord in ease you forget and say: "Perhaps my Lord will show me a nearer way to rectitude."

وَلَبِثُوْا فِيْ كَهْفِهِمْ ثَلٰثَ مِائَةٍ سِنِيْنَ وَازْدَادُوْا تِسْعًا

wa labiṡụ fī kahfihim ṡalāṡa mi`atin sinīna wazdādụ tis'ā

(It is said) they stayed in the cave three hundred years and nine.

قُلِ اللّٰهُ اَعْلَمُ بِمَا لَبِثُوْا ۚ لَهٗ غَيْبُ السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالْاَرْضِۗ اَبْصِرْ بِهٖ وَاَسْمِعْۗ مَا لَهُمْ مِّنْ دُوْنِهٖ مِنْ وَّلِيٍّۗ وَلَا يُشْرِكُ فِيْ حُكْمِهٖٓ اَحَدًا

qulillāhu a'lamu bimā labiṡụ, lahụ gaibus-samāwāti wal-arḍ, abṣir bihī wa asmi', mā lahum min dụnihī miw waliyy, wa lā yusyriku fī ḥukmihī aḥadā

You say: "God only knows how long they stayed. He alone knows the secrets of the heavens and the earth. How distinctly He sees and hears! They have no other guardian but Him and He does not share His authority with any one."

وَاتْلُ مَآ اُوْحِيَ اِلَيْكَ مِنْ كِتَابِ رَبِّكَۗ لَا مُبَدِّلَ لِكَلِمٰتِهٖۗ وَلَنْ تَجِدَ مِنْ دُوْنِهٖ مُلْتَحَدًا

watlu mā ụḥiya ilaika ming kitābi rabbik, lā mubaddila likalimātih, wa lan tajida min dụnihī multaḥadā

Recite what has been revealed to you of the Book of your Lord. There is no one who can change the word of God; and you will not find refuge except in Him.

وَاصْبِرْ نَفْسَكَ مَعَ الَّذِيْنَ يَدْعُوْنَ رَبَّهُمْ بِالْغَدٰوةِ وَالْعَشِيِّ يُرِيْدُوْنَ وَجْهَهٗ وَلَا تَعْدُ عَيْنٰكَ عَنْهُمْۚ تُرِيْدُ زِيْنَةَ الْحَيٰوةِ الدُّنْيَاۚ وَلَا تُطِعْ مَنْ اَغْفَلْنَا قَلْبَهٗ عَنْ ذِكْرِنَا وَاتَّبَعَ هَوٰىهُ وَكَانَ اَمْرُهٗ فُرُطًا

waṣbir nafsaka ma'allażīna yad'ụna rabbahum bil-gadāti wal-'asyiyyi yurīdụna waj-hahụ wa lā ta'du 'aināka 'an-hum, turīdu zīnatal-ḥayātid-dun-yā, wa lā tuṭi' man agfalnā qalbahụ 'an żikrinā wattaba'a hawāhu wa kāna amruhụ furuṭā

Persevere with those who call on their Lord morning and evening seeking His magnificence. Do not turn your eyes away from them seeking the splendours of this world and do not follow him whose heart We have made oblivious to Our remembrance who follows his own lust and exceeds the bound.

وَقُلِ الْحَقُّ مِنْ رَّبِّكُمْۗ فَمَنْ شَاۤءَ فَلْيُؤْمِنْ وَّمَنْ شَاۤءَ فَلْيَكْفُرْۚ اِنَّآ اَعْتَدْنَا لِلظّٰلِمِيْنَ نَارًاۙ اَحَاطَ بِهِمْ سُرَادِقُهَاۗ وَاِنْ يَّسْتَغِيْثُوْا يُغَاثُوْا بِمَاۤءٍ كَالْمُهْلِ يَشْوِى الْوُجُوْهَۗ بِئْسَ الشَّرَابُۗ وَسَاۤءَتْ مُرْتَفَقًا

wa qulil-ḥaqqu mir rabbikum, fa man syā`a falyu`miw wa man syā`a falyakfur, innā a'tadnā liẓ-ẓālimīna nāran aḥāṭa bihim surādiquhā, wa iy yastagīṡụ yugāṡụ bimā`ing kal-muhli yasywil-wujụh, bi`sasy-syarāb, wa sā`at murtafaqā

Say: "The truth is from your Lord: So believe if you like or do not believe if you will." We have prepared for the sinners a fire which will envelope them in its tent. If they ask for water they will be helped to liquid like molten brass that would scald their mouths. How evil the drink and evil the resting-place!

اِنَّ الَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوْا وَعَمِلُوا الصّٰلِحٰتِ اِنَّا لَا نُضِيْعُ اَجْرَ مَنْ اَحْسَنَ عَمَلًاۚ

innallażīna āmanụ wa 'amiluṣ-ṣāliḥāti innā lā nuḍī'u ajra man aḥsana 'amalā

But surely We do not let the reward of those who believe and do the right to go waste.

اُولٰۤىِٕكَ لَهُمْ جَنّٰتُ عَدْنٍ تَجْرِيْ مِنْ تَحْتِهِمُ الْاَنْهٰرُ يُحَلَّوْنَ فِيْهَا مِنْ اَسَاوِرَ مِنْ ذَهَبٍ وَّيَلْبَسُوْنَ ثِيَابًا خُضْرًا مِّنْ سُنْدُسٍ وَّاِسْتَبْرَقٍ مُّتَّكِىِٕيْنَ فِيْهَا عَلَى الْاَرَاۤىِٕكِۗ نِعْمَ الثَّوَابُۗ وَحَسُنَتْ مُرْتَفَقًا

ulā`ika lahum jannātu 'adnin tajrī min taḥtihimul-an-hāru yuḥallauna fīhā min asāwira min żahabiw wa yalbasụna ṡiyāban khuḍram min sundusiw wa istabraqim muttaki`īna fīhā 'alal-arā`ik, ni'maṡ-ṡawāb, wa ḥasunat murtafaqā

There will be gardens of Eden for them with rivers flowing by where they will be decked in bracelets of gold with silken robes of green and of brocades to wear reclining on couches. How excellent the guerdon and excellent the resting-place!

۞ وَاضْرِبْ لَهُمْ مَّثَلًا رَّجُلَيْنِ جَعَلْنَا لِاَحَدِهِمَا جَنَّتَيْنِ مِنْ اَعْنَابٍ وَّحَفَفْنٰهُمَا بِنَخْلٍ وَّجَعَلْنَا بَيْنَهُمَا زَرْعًاۗ

waḍrib lahum maṡalar rajulaini ja'alnā li`aḥadihimā jannataini min a'nābiw wa ḥafafnāhumā binakhliw wa ja'alnā bainahumā zar'ā

Tell them the parable of two men. We gave one two gardens of grapes surrounded by date-palm trees with corn fields in between.

كِلْتَا الْجَنَّتَيْنِ اٰتَتْ اُكُلَهَا وَلَمْ تَظْلِمْ مِّنْهُ شَيْـًٔاۙ وَّفَجَّرْنَا خِلٰلَهُمَا نَهَرًاۙ

kiltal-jannataini ātat ukulahā wa lam taẓlim min-hu syai`aw wa fajjarnā khilālahumā naharā

Each of the gardens yielded its fruit and did not withhold the least; and We made a stream flow in between them.

Number of Verses 110


وَّكَانَ لَهٗ ثَمَرٌۚ فَقَالَ لِصَاحِبِهٖ وَهُوَ يُحَاوِرُهٗٓ اَنَا۠ اَكْثَرُ مِنْكَ مَالًا وَّاَعَزُّ نَفَرًا

wa kāna lahụ ṡamar, fa qāla liṣāḥibihī wa huwa yuḥāwiruhū ana akṡaru mingka mālaw wa a'azzu nafarā

So he became rich. Arguing one day with his friend he said: "I have more wealth than you and more powerful kinsmen."

وَدَخَلَ جَنَّتَهٗ وَهُوَ ظَالِمٌ لِّنَفْسِهٖۚ قَالَ مَآ اَظُنُّ اَنْ تَبِيْدَ هٰذِهٖٓ اَبَدًاۙ

wa dakhala jannatahụ wa huwa ẓālimul linafsih, qāla mā aẓunnu an tabīda hāżihī abadā

And he walked into his garden and (forgetting) his limit said: "I cannot imagine that this will ever be ruined

وَّمَآ اَظُنُّ السَّاعَةَ قَاۤىِٕمَةً وَّلَىِٕنْ رُّدِدْتُّ اِلٰى رَبِّيْ لَاَجِدَنَّ خَيْرًا مِّنْهَا مُنْقَلَبًا

wa mā aẓunnus-sā'ata qā`imataw wa la`ir rudittu ilā rabbī la`ajidanna khairam min-hā mungqalabā

Nor can I think that the Hour (of Doom) will come And even if I am brought back to my Lord I will surely find a better place there than this."

قَالَ لَهٗ صَاحِبُهٗ وَهُوَ يُحَاوِرُهٗٓ اَكَفَرْتَ بِالَّذِيْ خَلَقَكَ مِنْ تُرَابٍ ثُمَّ مِنْ نُّطْفَةٍ ثُمَّ سَوّٰىكَ رَجُلًاۗ

qāla lahụ ṣāḥibuhụ wa huwa yuḥāwiruhū a kafarta billażī khalaqaka min turābin ṡumma min nuṭfatin ṡumma sawwāka rajulā

Disputing with him his companion said: "Do you disbelieve in Him who created you from dust then a drop of semen then formed you into a man?

لٰكِنَّا۠ هُوَ اللّٰهُ رَبِّيْ وَلَآ اُشْرِكُ بِرَبِّيْٓ اَحَدًا

lākinna huwallāhu rabbī wa lā usyriku birabbī aḥadā

And He is God my Lord and I do not associate any one with my Lord.

وَلَوْلَآ اِذْ دَخَلْتَ جَنَّتَكَ قُلْتَ مَا شَاۤءَ اللّٰهُ ۙ لَا قُوَّةَ اِلَّا بِاللّٰهِ ۚاِنْ تَرَنِ اَنَا۠ اَقَلَّ مِنْكَ مَالًا وَّوَلَدًاۚ

walau lā iż dakhalta jannataka qulta mā syā`allāhu lā quwwata illā billāh, in tarani ana aqalla mingka mālaw wa waladā

When you entered your garden why did you not say: ´As God may please;´ for no one has power except given by God? Though you see me poorer in wealth and children than you

فَعَسٰى رَبِّيْٓ اَنْ يُّؤْتِيَنِ خَيْرًا مِّنْ جَنَّتِكَ وَيُرْسِلَ عَلَيْهَا حُسْبَانًا مِّنَ السَّمَاۤءِ فَتُصْبِحَ صَعِيْدًا زَلَقًاۙ

fa asā rabbī ay yu`tiyani khairam min jannatika wa yursila 'alaihā ḥusbānam minas-samā`i fa tuṣbiḥa ṣa'īdan zalaqā

Yet my Lord may haply give me a garden better than yours and He may send a thunder-bolt from the skies and in the morning it will be a barren plain;

اَوْ يُصْبِحَ مَاۤؤُهَا غَوْرًا فَلَنْ تَسْتَطِيْعَ لَهٗ طَلَبًا

au yuṣbiḥa mā`uhā gauran fa lan tastaṭī'a lahụ ṭalabā

Or else of a morning its water may sink underground and you will not find a trace of it."

وَاُحِيْطَ بِثَمَرِهٖ فَاَصْبَحَ يُقَلِّبُ كَفَّيْهِ عَلٰى مَآ اَنْفَقَ فِيْهَا وَهِيَ خَاوِيَةٌ عَلٰى عُرُوْشِهَا وَيَقُوْلُ يٰلَيْتَنِيْ لَمْ اُشْرِكْ بِرَبِّيْٓ اَحَدًا

wa uḥīṭa biṡamarihī fa aṣbaḥa yuqallibu kaffaihi 'alā mā anfaqa fīhā wa hiya khāwiyatun 'alā 'urụsyihā wa yaqụlu yā laitanī lam usyrik birabbī aḥadā

And his vines were overtaken (with disaster) and he began to wring his hands (at the loss) of what he had spent on them for the vines had fallen upon their trellises; and he said: "Would to God that I had not associated any one with my Lord."

وَلَمْ تَكُنْ لَّهٗ فِئَةٌ يَّنْصُرُوْنَهٗ مِنْ دُوْنِ اللّٰهِ وَمَا كَانَ مُنْتَصِرًاۗ

wa lam takul lahụ fi`atuy yanṣurụnahụ min dụnillāhi wa mā kāna muntaṣirā

He had no body to help him other than God nor was he able to save himself.

هُنَالِكَ الْوَلَايَةُ لِلّٰهِ الْحَقِّۗ هُوَ خَيْرٌ ثَوَابًا وَّخَيْرٌ عُقْبًا

hunālikal-walāyatu lillāhil-ḥaqq, huwa khairun ṡawābaw wa khairun 'uqbā

The jurisdiction in this province belongs to God. His is the best reward and His the best requital.

وَاضْرِبْ لَهُمْ مَّثَلَ الْحَيٰوةِ الدُّنْيَا كَمَاۤءٍ اَنْزَلْنٰهُ مِنَ السَّمَاۤءِ فَاخْتَلَطَ بِهٖ نَبَاتُ الْاَرْضِ فَاَصْبَحَ هَشِيْمًا تَذْرُوْهُ الرِّيٰحُ ۗوَكَانَ اللّٰهُ عَلٰى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ مُّقْتَدِرًا

waḍrib lahum maṡalal-ḥayātid-dun-yā kamā`in anzalnāhu minas-samā`i fakhtalaṭa bihī nabātul-arḍi fa aṣbaḥa hasyīman tażrụhur-riyāḥ, wa kānallāhu 'alā kulli syai`im muqtadirā

Present to them the example of the life of this world so like the water We send down from the skies that mingles with the earth to nourish its vegetation which then on the morrow turns to stubble and is blown away by the wind. God has power over everything.

اَلْمَالُ وَالْبَنُوْنَ زِيْنَةُ الْحَيٰوةِ الدُّنْيَاۚ وَالْبٰقِيٰتُ الصّٰلِحٰتُ خَيْرٌ عِنْدَ رَبِّكَ ثَوَابًا وَّخَيْرٌ اَمَلًا

al-mālu wal-banụna zīnatul-ḥayātid-dun-yā, wal-bāqiyātuṣ-ṣāliḥātu khairun 'inda rabbika ṡawābaw wa khairun amalā

Wealth and children are only the gloss of this world but good deeds that abide are better with your Lord for recompense and better for expectation.

وَيَوْمَ نُسَيِّرُ الْجِبَالَ وَتَرَى الْاَرْضَ بَارِزَةًۙ وَّحَشَرْنٰهُمْ فَلَمْ نُغَادِرْ مِنْهُمْ اَحَدًاۚ

wa yauma nusayyirul-jibāla wa taral-arḍa bārizataw wa ḥasyarnāhum fa lam nugādir min-hum aḥadā

The day We shall move the mountains and you see the earth an open plain We shall gather them together leaving none behind.

Number of Verses 110


وَعُرِضُوْا عَلٰى رَبِّكَ صَفًّاۗ لَقَدْ جِئْتُمُوْنَا كَمَا خَلَقْنٰكُمْ اَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍۢ ۖبَلْ زَعَمْتُمْ اَلَّنْ نَّجْعَلَ لَكُمْ مَّوْعِدًا

wa 'uriḍụ 'alā rabbika ṣaffā, laqad ji`tumụnā kamā khalaqnākum awwala marratim bal za'amtum allan naj'ala lakum mau'idā

They will be arraigned before their Lord row on row (and He will say): "Well you have come to Us as We had first created you even though you imagined We had fixed no time for this meeting."

وَوُضِعَ الْكِتٰبُ فَتَرَى الْمُجْرِمِيْنَ مُشْفِقِيْنَ مِمَّا فِيْهِ وَيَقُوْلُوْنَ يٰوَيْلَتَنَا مَالِ هٰذَا الْكِتٰبِ لَا يُغَادِرُ صَغِيْرَةً وَّلَا كَبِيْرَةً اِلَّآ اَحْصٰىهَاۚ وَوَجَدُوْا مَا عَمِلُوْا حَاضِرًاۗ وَلَا يَظْلِمُ رَبُّكَ اَحَدًا

wa wuḍi'al kitābu fa taral-mujrimīna musyfiqīna mimmā fīhi wa yaqụlụna yā wailatanā māli hāżal-kitābi lā yugādiru ṣagīrataw wa lā kabīratan illā aḥṣāhā, wa wajadụ mā 'amilụ ḥāḍirā, wa lā yaẓlimu rabbuka aḥadā

The ledger (of their deeds) would be placed before them. Then you will see the sinners terrified at its contents and say: "Alas what a written revelation this which has not left unaccounted the smallest or the greatest thing!" They will find in it whatsoever they had done. Your Lord does not wrong any one.

وَاِذْ قُلْنَا لِلْمَلٰۤىِٕكَةِ اسْجُدُوْا لِاٰدَمَ فَسَجَدُوْٓا اِلَّآ اِبْلِيْسَۗ كَانَ مِنَ الْجِنِّ فَفَسَقَ عَنْ اَمْرِ رَبِّهٖۗ اَفَتَتَّخِذُوْنَهٗ وَذُرِّيَّتَهٗٓ اَوْلِيَاۤءَ مِنْ دُوْنِيْ وَهُمْ لَكُمْ عَدُوٌّۗ بِئْسَ لِلظّٰلِمِيْنَ بَدَلًا

wa iż qulnā lil-malā`ikatisjudụ li`ādama fa sajadū illā iblīs, kāna minal-jinni fa fasaqa 'an amri rabbih, a fa tattakhiżụnahụ wa żurriyyatahū auliyā`a min dụnī wa hum lakum 'aduww, bi`sa liẓ-ẓālimīna badalā

When We said to the angels: "Bow before Adam in adoration " they all bowed but Iblis. He was one of the jinni and rebelled against his Lord´s command. And yet you take him and his offspring as your friends instead of Me even though they are your enemies. How sad a substitute for the evil-doers!

۞ مَآ اَشْهَدْتُّهُمْ خَلْقَ السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالْاَرْضِ وَلَا خَلْقَ اَنْفُسِهِمْۖ وَمَا كُنْتُ مُتَّخِذَ الْمُضِلِّيْنَ عَضُدًا

mā asy-hattuhum khalqas-samāwāti wal-arḍi wa lā khalqa anfusihim wa mā kuntu muttakhiżal-muḍillīna 'aḍudā

I did not call them to witness the creation of the heavens and the earth nor their own creation. I would not take as helpers those who lead (men) astray.

Number of Verses 110


وَيَوْمَ يَقُوْلُ نَادُوْا شُرَكَاۤءِيَ الَّذِيْنَ زَعَمْتُمْ فَدَعَوْهُمْ فَلَمْ يَسْتَجِيْبُوْا لَهُمْ وَجَعَلْنَا بَيْنَهُمْ مَّوْبِقًا

wa yauma yaqụlu nādụ syurakā`iyallażīna za'amtum fa da'auhum fa lam yastajībụ lahum wa ja'alnā bainahum maubiqā

The day He will say: "Call those you had called My compeers " they will call them but will get no response and We shall place a gulf between them.

وَرَاَ الْمُجْرِمُوْنَ النَّارَ فَظَنُّوْٓا اَنَّهُمْ مُّوَاقِعُوْهَا وَلَمْ يَجِدُوْا عَنْهَا مَصْرِفًا

wa ra`al-mujrimụnan-nāra fa ẓannū annahum muwāqi'ụhā wa lam yajidụ 'an-hā maṣrifā

The sinners will see the Fire and know that they will be thrown into it and will not find a way of escape from it.

وَلَقَدْ صَرَّفْنَا فِيْ هٰذَا الْقُرْاٰنِ لِلنَّاسِ مِنْ كُلِّ مَثَلٍۗ وَكَانَ الْاِنْسَانُ اَكْثَرَ شَيْءٍ جَدَلًا

wa laqad ṣarrafnā fī hāżal-qur`āni lin-nāsi ming kulli maṡal, wa kānal-insānu akṡara syai`in jadalā

We have explained in various ways all things to men in this Qur´an; but of all things man is most contentious.

Number of Verses 110


وَمَا مَنَعَ النَّاسَ اَنْ يُّؤْمِنُوْٓا اِذْ جَاۤءَهُمُ الْهُدٰى وَيَسْتَغْفِرُوْا رَبَّهُمْ اِلَّآ اَنْ تَأْتِيَهُمْ سُنَّةُ الْاَوَّلِيْنَ اَوْ يَأْتِيَهُمُ الْعَذَابُ قُبُلًا

wa mā mana'an-nāsa ay yu`minū iż jā`ahumul-hudā wa yastagfirụ rabbahum illā an ta`tiyahum sunnatul-awwalīna au ya`tiyahumul-'ażābu qubulā

There is nothing to prevent men from believing when the guidance has come to them and asking for their Lord´s forgiveness unless they want the example of earlier people visited upon them or the punishment to appear right before their eyes.

Number of Verses 110


وَمَا نُرْسِلُ الْمُرْسَلِيْنَ اِلَّا مُبَشِّرِيْنَ وَمُنْذِرِيْنَۚ وَيُجَادِلُ الَّذِيْنَ كَفَرُوْا بِالْبَاطِلِ لِيُدْحِضُوْا بِهِ الْحَقَّ وَاتَّخَذُوْٓا اٰيٰتِيْ وَمَآ اُنْذِرُوْا هُزُوًا

wa mā nursilul-mursalīna illā mubasysyirīna wa munżirīn, wa yujādilullażīna kafarụ bil-bāṭili liyud-ḥiḍụ bihil-ḥaqqa wattakhażū āyātī wa mā unżirụ huzuwā

We never send apostles but to convey happy tidings and to warn. But those who disbelieve contend with FALSE arguments to nullify the truth. They make a mockery of My revelations and of what they had been warned.

وَمَنْ اَظْلَمُ مِمَّنْ ذُكِّرَ بِاٰيٰتِ رَبِّهٖ فَاَعْرَضَ عَنْهَا وَنَسِيَ مَا قَدَّمَتْ يَدَاهُۗ اِنَّا جَعَلْنَا عَلٰى قُلُوْبِهِمْ اَكِنَّةً اَنْ يَّفْقَهُوْهُ وَفِيْٓ اٰذَانِهِمْ وَقْرًاۗ وَاِنْ تَدْعُهُمْ اِلَى الْهُدٰى فَلَنْ يَّهْتَدُوْٓا اِذًا اَبَدًا

wa man aẓlamu mim man żukkira bi`āyāti rabbihī fa a'raḍa 'an-hā wa nasiya mā qaddamat yadāh, innā ja'alnā 'alā qulụbihim akinnatan ay yafqahụhu wa fī āżānihim waqrā, wa in tad'uhum ilal-hudā fa lay yahtadū iżan abadā

Who is more unjust than he who on being reminded of his Lord´s revelations turns away from them and forgets the evil deeds he had committed in the past. Verily We have placed a covering on their hearts so that they do not understand and a deafness in their ears so that however you may call them to guidance they will never be guided aright.

Number of Verses 110


وَرَبُّكَ الْغَفُوْرُ ذُو الرَّحْمَةِۗ لَوْ يُؤَاخِذُهُمْ بِمَا كَسَبُوْا لَعَجَّلَ لَهُمُ الْعَذَابَۗ بَلْ لَّهُمْ مَّوْعِدٌ لَّنْ يَّجِدُوْا مِنْ دُوْنِهٖ مَوْىِٕلًا

wa rabbukal-gafụru żur-raḥmah, lau yu`ākhiżuhum bimā kasabụ la'ajjala lahumul-'ażāb, bal lahum mau'idul lay yajidụ min dụnihī mau`ilā

But your Lord is forgiving full of benevolence. If He had pleased to punish them for their doings He would have punished them immediately. But a term is fixed for them from which they will find no escape.

وَتِلْكَ الْقُرٰٓى اَهْلَكْنٰهُمْ لَمَّا ظَلَمُوْا وَجَعَلْنَا لِمَهْلِكِهِمْ مَّوْعِدًا

wa tilkal-qurā ahlaknāhum lammā ẓalamụ wa ja'alnā limahlikihim mau'idā

As for these habitations We destroyed them only when they transgressed; even so We had fixed a time for their annihilation.

وَاِذْ قَالَ مُوْسٰى لِفَتٰىهُ لَآ اَبْرَحُ حَتّٰٓى اَبْلُغَ مَجْمَعَ الْبَحْرَيْنِ اَوْ اَمْضِيَ حُقُبًا

wa iż qāla mụsā lifatāhu lā abraḥu ḥattā abluga majma'al-baḥraini au amḍiya ḥuqubā

When Moses said to his servant (Joshua): "I will not give up till I reach the confluence of two oceans or I will journey on and on."

فَلَمَّا بَلَغَا مَجْمَعَ بَيْنِهِمَا نَسِيَا حُوْتَهُمَا فَاتَّخَذَ سَبِيْلَهٗ فِى الْبَحْرِ سَرَبًا

fa lammā balagā majma'a bainihimā nasiyā ḥụtahumā fattakhaża sabīlahụ fil-baḥri sarabā

When they reached the confluence they forgot the fish (they had brought as food) which swiftly made its way into the sea.

فَلَمَّا جَاوَزَا قَالَ لِفَتٰىهُ اٰتِنَا غَدَاۤءَنَاۖ لَقَدْ لَقِيْنَا مِنْ سَفَرِنَا هٰذَا نَصَبًا

fa lammā jāwazā qāla lifatāhu ātinā gadā`anā laqad laqīnā min safarinā hāżā naṣabā

When they had gone past (the confluence) Moses said to his servant: "Give me my breakfast. I am exhausted from this journey."

قَالَ اَرَاَيْتَ اِذْ اَوَيْنَآ اِلَى الصَّخْرَةِ فَاِنِّيْ نَسِيْتُ الْحُوْتَۖ وَمَآ اَنْسٰىنِيْهُ اِلَّا الشَّيْطٰنُ اَنْ اَذْكُرَهٗۚ وَاتَّخَذَ سَبِيْلَهٗ فِى الْبَحْرِ عَجَبًا

qāla a ra`aita iż awainā ilaṣ-ṣakhrati fa innī nasītul-ḥụta wa mā ansānīhu illasy-syaiṭānu an ażkurah, wattakhaża sabīlahụ fil-baḥri 'ajabā

He said: "You see I forgot the fish on the rock where we had stopped. Only Satan made me forget to mention this; but the wonder is the fish escaped to the sea."

قَالَ ذٰلِكَ مَا كُنَّا نَبْغِۖ فَارْتَدَّا عَلٰٓى اٰثَارِهِمَا قَصَصًاۙ

qāla żālika mā kunnā nabgi fartaddā 'alā āṡārihimā qaṣaṣā

Moses said: "But that is exactly what we were seeking." So they retraced their steps.

فَوَجَدَا عَبْدًا مِّنْ عِبَادِنَآ اٰتَيْنٰهُ رَحْمَةً مِّنْ عِنْدِنَا وَعَلَّمْنٰهُ مِنْ لَّدُنَّا عِلْمًا

fa wajadā 'abdam min 'ibādinā ātaināhu raḥmatam min 'indinā wa 'allamnāhu mil ladunnā 'ilmā

Then they found one of Our votaries whom We had blessed and given knowledge from Us.

قَالَ لَهٗ مُوسٰى هَلْ اَتَّبِعُكَ عَلٰٓى اَنْ تُعَلِّمَنِ مِمَّا عُلِّمْتَ رُشْدًا

qāla lahụ mụsā hal attabi'uka 'alā an tu'allimani mimmā 'ullimta rusydā

Moses said to him: "May I attend upon you that you may instruct me in the knowledge you have been taught of the right way?"

قَالَ اِنَّكَ لَنْ تَسْتَطِيْعَ مَعِيَ صَبْرًا

qāla innaka lan tastaṭī'a ma'iya ṣabrā

He said: "You will not be able to bear with me.

وَكَيْفَ تَصْبِرُ عَلٰى مَا لَمْ تُحِطْ بِهٖ خُبْرًا

wa kaifa taṣbiru 'alā mā lam tuḥiṭ bihī khubrā

"How can you bear that which is beyond your comprehension?"

قَالَ سَتَجِدُنِيْٓ اِنْ شَاۤءَ اللّٰهُ صَابِرًا وَّلَآ اَعْصِيْ لَكَ اَمْرًا

qāla satajidunī in syā`allāhu ṣābiraw wa lā a'ṣī laka amrā

"You will find me patient if God wills " said Moses; "and I will not disobey you in any thing."

قَالَ فَاِنِ اتَّبَعْتَنِيْ فَلَا تَسْـَٔلْنِيْ عَنْ شَيْءٍ حَتّٰٓى اُحْدِثَ لَكَ مِنْهُ ذِكْرًا

qāla fa inittaba'tanī fa lā tas`alnī 'an syai`in ḥattā uḥdiṡa laka min-hu żikrā

"If you must follow me " he said "do not ask me any thing until I speak of it to you myself."

فَانْطَلَقَاۗ حَتّٰٓى اِذَا رَكِبَا فِى السَّفِيْنَةِ خَرَقَهَاۗ قَالَ اَخَرَقْتَهَا لِتُغْرِقَ اَهْلَهَاۚ لَقَدْ جِئْتَ شَيْـًٔا اِمْرًا

fanṭalaqā, ḥattā iżā rakibā fis-safīnati kharaqahā, qāla a kharaqtahā litugriqa ahlahā, laqad ji`ta syai`an imrā

So they set out till they (came to the quay) and went on board a ship in which he made a hole (and Moses said:) "You have made a hole in the boat to drown its passengers? You have done a strange thing!"

قَالَ اَلَمْ اَقُلْ اِنَّكَ لَنْ تَسْتَطِيْعَ مَعِيَ صَبْرًا

qāla a lam aqul innaka lan tastaṭī'a ma'iya ṣabrā

"Did I not tell you " he replied "that you will not be able to bear with me?"

قَالَ لَا تُؤَاخِذْنِيْ بِمَا نَسِيْتُ وَلَا تُرْهِقْنِيْ مِنْ اَمْرِيْ عُسْرًا

qāla lā tu`ākhiżnī bimā nasītu wa lā tur-hiqnī min amrī 'usrā

(Moses) said: "Do not hold me for having forgotten and do not reprove me and make my task difficult."

فَانْطَلَقَا ۗحَتّٰٓى اِذَا لَقِيَا غُلٰمًا فَقَتَلَهٗ ۙقَالَ اَقَتَلْتَ نَفْسًا زَكِيَّةً؈ۢبِغَيْرِ نَفْسٍۗ لَقَدْ جِئْتَ شَيْـًٔا نُكْرًا ۔

fanṭalaqā, ḥattā iżā laqiyā gulāman fa qatalahụ qāla a qatalta nafsan zakiyyatam bigairi nafs, laqad ji`ta syai`an nukrā

The two went on till they came to a boy whom he killed. Moses exclaimed: "You have killed an innocent soul who had taken no life. You have done a most abominable thing!"

۞ قَالَ اَلَمْ اَقُلْ لَّكَ اِنَّكَ لَنْ تَسْتَطِيْعَ مَعِيَ صَبْرًا

qāla a lam aqul laka innaka lan tastaṭī'a ma'iya ṣabrā

He said: "Did I not tell you you will not be able to bear with me?"

قَالَ اِنْ سَاَلْتُكَ عَنْ شَيْءٍۢ بَعْدَهَا فَلَا تُصٰحِبْنِيْۚ قَدْ بَلَغْتَ مِنْ لَّدُنِّيْ عُذْرًا

qāla in sa`altuka 'an syai`im ba'dahā fa lā tuṣāḥibnī, qad balagta mil ladunnī 'użrā

Moses said: "If I ask you any thing again then do not keep me with you. You have my apology."

فَانْطَلَقَا ۗحَتّٰىٓ اِذَآ اَتَيَآ اَهْلَ قَرْيَةِ ِۨاسْتَطْعَمَآ اَهْلَهَا فَاَبَوْا اَنْ يُّضَيِّفُوْهُمَا فَوَجَدَا فِيْهَا جِدَارًا يُّرِيْدُ اَنْ يَّنْقَضَّ فَاَقَامَهٗ ۗقَالَ لَوْ شِئْتَ لَتَّخَذْتَ عَلَيْهِ اَجْرًا

fanṭalaqā, ḥattā iżā atayā ahla qaryatinistaṭ'amā ahlahā fa abau ay yuḍayyifụhumā fa wajadā fīhā jidāray yurīdu ay yangqaḍḍa fa aqāmah, qāla lau syi`ta lattakhażta 'alaihi ajrā

The two went on till they came upon some villagers and asked the people for food but they refused to entertain them. There they found a wall that was crumbling which he repaired. Moses remarked: "You could have demanded wages for it if you liked."

قَالَ هٰذَا فِرَاقُ بَيْنِيْ وَبَيْنِكَۚ سَاُنَبِّئُكَ بِتَأْوِيْلِ مَا لَمْ تَسْتَطِعْ عَّلَيْهِ صَبْرًا

qāla hāżā firāqu bainī wa bainik, sa`unabbi`uka bita`wīli mā lam tastaṭi' 'alaihi ṣabrā

"This is the parting of our "ways " he said. "But I will now explain the things you could not bear:

اَمَّا السَّفِيْنَةُ فَكَانَتْ لِمَسٰكِيْنَ يَعْمَلُوْنَ فِى الْبَحْرِ فَاَرَدْتُّ اَنْ اَعِيْبَهَاۗ وَكَانَ وَرَاۤءَهُمْ مَّلِكٌ يَّأْخُذُ كُلَّ سَفِيْنَةٍ غَصْبًا

ammas-safīnatu fa kānat limasākīna ya'malụna fil-baḥri fa arattu an a'ībahā, wa kāna warā`ahum malikuy ya`khużu kulla safīnatin gaṣbā

That boat belonged to poor people who used to toil on the sea. I damaged it because there was a king after them who used to seize every ship by force.

وَاَمَّا الْغُلٰمُ فَكَانَ اَبَوَاهُ مُؤْمِنَيْنِ فَخَشِيْنَآ اَنْ يُّرْهِقَهُمَا طُغْيَانًا وَّكُفْرًا ۚ

wa ammal-gulāmu fa kāna abawāhu mu`minaini fa khasyīnā ay yur-hiqahumā ṭugyānaw wa kufrā

As for the boy his parents were believers but we feared that he would harass them with defiance and disbelief.

فَاَرَدْنَآ اَنْ يُّبْدِلَهُمَا رَبُّهُمَا خَيْرًا مِّنْهُ زَكٰوةً وَّاَقْرَبَ رُحْمًا

fa aradnā ay yubdilahumā rabbuhumā khairam min-hu zakātaw wa aqraba ruḥmā

We hoped their Lord would give them a substitute better than him in virtue and goodness.

وَاَمَّا الْجِدَارُ فَكَانَ لِغُلٰمَيْنِ يَتِيْمَيْنِ فِى الْمَدِيْنَةِ وَكَانَ تَحْتَهٗ كَنْزٌ لَّهُمَا وَكَانَ اَبُوْهُمَا صَالِحًا ۚفَاَرَادَ رَبُّكَ اَنْ يَّبْلُغَآ اَشُدَّهُمَا وَيَسْتَخْرِجَا كَنْزَهُمَا رَحْمَةً مِّنْ رَّبِّكَۚ وَمَا فَعَلْتُهٗ عَنْ اَمْرِيْۗ ذٰلِكَ تَأْوِيْلُ مَا لَمْ تَسْطِعْ عَّلَيْهِ صَبْرًاۗ

wa ammal-jidāru fa kāna ligulāmaini yatīmaini fil-madīnati wa kāna taḥtahụ kanzul lahumā wa kāna abụhumā ṣāliḥā, fa arāda rabbuka ay yablugā asyuddahumā wa yastakhrijā kanzahumā raḥmatam mir rabbik, wa mā fa'altuhụ 'an amrī, żālika ta`wīlu mā lam tasṭi' 'alaihi ṣabrā

As for that wall it belonged to two orphan boys of the city and their treasure was buried under it. Their father was an upright man. So your Lord willed that on reaching the age of maturity they should dig out their treasure as a favour from their Lord. So I did not do that of my own accord. This is the explanation of things you could not bear with patience."

وَيَسْـَٔلُوْنَكَ عَنْ ذِى الْقَرْنَيْنِۗ قُلْ سَاَتْلُوْا عَلَيْكُمْ مِّنْهُ ذِكْرًا ۗ

wa yas`alụnaka 'an żil-qarnaīn, qul sa`atlụ 'alaikum min-hu żikrā

They ask you about Dhu´l-Qarnain.

اِنَّا مَكَّنَّا لَهٗ فِى الْاَرْضِ وَاٰتَيْنٰهُ مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ سَبَبًا ۙ

innā makkannā lahụ fil-arḍi wa ātaināhu ming kulli syai`in sababā

Say: "I will cite before you his commemoration." We gave him authority in the land and means of accomplishing every end.

حَتّٰىٓ اِذَا بَلَغَ مَغْرِبَ الشَّمْسِ وَجَدَهَا تَغْرُبُ فِيْ عَيْنٍ حَمِئَةٍ وَّوَجَدَ عِنْدَهَا قَوْمًا ەۗ قُلْنَا يٰذَا الْقَرْنَيْنِ اِمَّآ اَنْ تُعَذِّبَ وَاِمَّآ اَنْ تَتَّخِذَ فِيْهِمْ حُسْنًا

ḥattā iżā balaga magribasy-syamsi wajadahā tagrubu fī 'ainin ḥami`atiw wa wajada 'indahā qaumā, qulnā yā żal-qarnaini immā an tu'ażżiba wa immā an tattakhiża fīhim ḥusnā

Till he reached the point of the setting sun and saw it set behind a muddy lake and near it found a people. We said: "O Dhu´l-Qarnain you may either punish them or treat them with kindness."

قَالَ اَمَّا مَنْ ظَلَمَ فَسَوْفَ نُعَذِّبُهٗ ثُمَّ يُرَدُّ اِلٰى رَبِّهٖ فَيُعَذِّبُهٗ عَذَابًا نُّكْرًا

qāla ammā man ẓalama fa saufa nu'ażżibuhụ ṡumma yuraddu ilā rabbihī fa yu'ażżibuhụ 'ażāban nukrā

He said: "I shall punish whosoever is wicked. He will then be sent back to his Lord who will inflict on him a terrible punishment.

وَاَمَّا مَنْ اٰمَنَ وَعَمِلَ صَالِحًا فَلَهٗ جَزَاۤءً ۨالْحُسْنٰىۚ وَسَنَقُوْلُ لَهٗ مِنْ اَمْرِنَا يُسْرًا ۗ

wa ammā man āmana wa 'amila ṣāliḥan fa lahụ jazā`anil-ḥusnā, wa sanaqụlu lahụ min amrinā yusrā

But he who believes and does the right will have an excellent reward and we shall make things easy for him."

حَتّٰىٓ اِذَا بَلَغَ مَطْلِعَ الشَّمْسِ وَجَدَهَا تَطْلُعُ عَلٰى قَوْمٍ لَّمْ نَجْعَلْ لَّهُمْ مِّنْ دُوْنِهَا سِتْرًا ۙ

ḥattā iżā balaga maṭli'asy-syamsi wajadahā taṭlu'u 'alā qaumil lam naj'al lahum min dụnihā sitrā

Till he reached the point of the rising sun and saw it rise over a people for whom We had provided no shelter against it.

كَذٰلِكَۗ وَقَدْ اَحَطْنَا بِمَا لَدَيْهِ خُبْرًا

każālik, wa qad aḥaṭnā bimā ladaihi khubrā

It was so for We were fully informed about him.

حَتّٰىٓ اِذَا بَلَغَ بَيْنَ السَّدَّيْنِ وَجَدَ مِنْ دُوْنِهِمَا قَوْمًاۙ لَّا يَكَادُوْنَ يَفْقَهُوْنَ قَوْلًا

ḥattā iżā balaga bainas-saddaini wajada min dụnihimā qaumal lā yakādụna yafqahụna qaulā

Till he reached a place between two mountains and found this side of it a people who understood but little of what was spoken.

قَالُوْا يٰذَا الْقَرْنَيْنِ اِنَّ يَأْجُوْجَ وَمَأْجُوْجَ مُفْسِدُوْنَ فِى الْاَرْضِ فَهَلْ نَجْعَلُ لَكَ خَرْجًا عَلٰٓى اَنْ تَجْعَلَ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَهُمْ سَدًّا

qālụ yā żal-qarnaini inna ya`jụja wa ma`jụja mufsidụna fil-arḍi fa hal naj'alu laka kharjan 'alā an taj'ala bainanā wa bainahum saddā

They said: ´O Dhu´l-Qarnain Gog and Magog are oppressing the land. May we pay you some tribute so that you could build a rampart between us and them?"

قَالَ مَا مَكَّنِّيْ فِيْهِ رَبِّيْ خَيْرٌ فَاَعِيْنُوْنِيْ بِقُوَّةٍ اَجْعَلْ بَيْنَكُمْ وَبَيْنَهُمْ رَدْمًا ۙ

qāla mā makkannī fīhi rabbī khairun fa a'īnụnī biquwwatin aj'al bainakum wa bainahum radmā

He said: "The ability my Lord has given me is better. So help me with your manual labour; I will build a wall between you and them.

اٰتُوْنِيْ زُبَرَ الْحَدِيْدِۗ حَتّٰىٓ اِذَا سَاوٰى بَيْنَ الصَّدَفَيْنِ قَالَ انْفُخُوْا ۗحَتّٰىٓ اِذَا جَعَلَهٗ نَارًاۙ قَالَ اٰتُوْنِيْٓ اُفْرِغْ عَلَيْهِ قِطْرًا ۗ

ātụnī zubaral-ḥadīd, ḥattā iżā sāwā bainaṣ-ṣadafaini qālanfukhụ, ḥattā iżā ja'alahụ nārang qāla ātụnī ufrig 'alaihi qiṭrā

Bring me ingots of iron " (which they did) until the space between two mountain sides was filled up. "Blow your bellows " he said; (and they blew) until it was red hot. "Bring me molten brass " he said "that I may pour over it."

فَمَا اسْطَاعُوْٓا اَنْ يَّظْهَرُوْهُ وَمَا اسْتَطَاعُوْا لَهٗ نَقْبًا

fa masṭā'ū ay yaẓ-harụhu wa mastaṭā'ụ lahụ naqbā

Thus (Gog and Magog) could neither climb over it nor dig a hole through (the rampart).

قَالَ هٰذَا رَحْمَةٌ مِّنْ رَّبِّيْۚ فَاِذَا جَاۤءَ وَعْدُ رَبِّيْ جَعَلَهٗ دَكَّاۤءَۚ وَكَانَ وَعْدُ رَبِّيْ حَقًّا ۗ

qāla hāżā raḥmatum mir rabbī, fa iżā jā`a wa'du rabbī ja'alahụ dakkā`, wa kāna wa'du rabbī ḥaqqā

"This is the benevolence of my Lord " he said; "but when the promise of my Lord comes to pass He will reduce it to a mound of dust; and the promise of my Lord is true."

۞ وَتَرَكْنَا بَعْضَهُمْ يَوْمَىِٕذٍ يَّمُوْجُ فِيْ بَعْضٍ وَّنُفِخَ فِى الصُّوْرِ فَجَمَعْنٰهُمْ جَمْعًا ۙ

wa taraknā ba'ḍahum yauma`iżiy yamụju fī ba'ḍiw wa nufikha fiṣ-ṣụri fa jama'nāhum jam'ā

We shall leave them on that day surging like waves pressing one against the other and the trumpet blast will be sounded when We shall gather them all together.

وَّعَرَضْنَا جَهَنَّمَ يَوْمَىِٕذٍ لِّلْكٰفِرِيْنَ عَرْضًا ۙ

wa 'araḍnā jahannama yauma`iżil lil-kāfirīna 'arḍā

Then We shall bring Hell right before the infidels

ۨالَّذِيْنَ كَانَتْ اَعْيُنُهُمْ فِيْ غِطَاۤءٍ عَنْ ذِكْرِيْ وَكَانُوْا لَا يَسْتَطِيْعُوْنَ سَمْعًا

allażīna kānat a'yunuhum fī giṭā`in 'an żikrī wa kānụ lā yastaṭī'ụna sam'ā

Whose eyes were veiled against My warning and they could not hear.

اَفَحَسِبَ الَّذِيْنَ كَفَرُوْٓا اَنْ يَّتَّخِذُوْا عِبَادِيْ مِنْ دُوْنِيْٓ اَوْلِيَاۤءَ ۗاِنَّآ اَعْتَدْنَا جَهَنَّمَ لِلْكٰفِرِيْنَ نُزُلًا

a fa ḥasiballażīna kafarū ay yattakhiżụ 'ibādī min dụnī auliyā`, innā a'tadnā jahannama lil-kāfirīna nuzulā

Do the unbelievers think they can make My own creatures their protectors against Me? We have prepared Hell for the hospitality of infidels.

قُلْ هَلْ نُنَبِّئُكُمْ بِالْاَخْسَرِيْنَ اَعْمَالًا ۗ

qul hal nunabbi`ukum bil-akhsarīna a'mālā

Say: "Shall I tell you whose labour will be wasted?

اَلَّذِيْنَ ضَلَّ سَعْيُهُمْ فِى الْحَيٰوةِ الدُّنْيَا وَهُمْ يَحْسَبُوْنَ اَنَّهُمْ يُحْسِنُوْنَ صُنْعًا

allażīna ḍalla sa'yuhum fil-ḥayātid-dun-yā wa hum yaḥsabụna annahum yuḥsinụna ṣun'ā

Theirs whose effort is misspent in pursuit of the pleasures of the world even though they think they are doing good things."

اُولٰۤىِٕكَ الَّذِيْنَ كَفَرُوْا بِاٰيٰتِ رَبِّهِمْ وَلِقَاۤىِٕهٖ فَحَبِطَتْ اَعْمَالُهُمْ فَلَا نُقِيْمُ لَهُمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيٰمَةِ وَزْنًا

ulā`ikallażīna kafarụ bi`āyāti rabbihim wa liqā`ihī fa ḥabiṭat a'māluhum fa lā nuqīmu lahum yaumal-qiyāmati waznā

They are those who reject the signs of their Lord and the meeting with Him. So their good deeds will be fruitless and on the Day of Judgement We shall not appoint any weighing for them.

ذٰلِكَ جَزَاۤؤُهُمْ جَهَنَّمُ بِمَا كَفَرُوْا وَاتَّخَذُوْٓا اٰيٰتِيْ وَرُسُلِيْ هُزُوًا

żālika jazā`uhum jahannamu bimā kafarụ wattakhażū āyātī wa rusulī huzuwā

Their requital will be Hell because they disbelieved and mocked My signs and messengers.

اِنَّ الَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوْا وَعَمِلُوا الصّٰلِحٰتِ كَانَتْ لَهُمْ جَنّٰتُ الْفِرْدَوْسِ نُزُلًا ۙ

innallażīna āmanụ wa 'amiluṣ-ṣāliḥāti kānat lahum jannātul-firdausi nuzulā

But surely those who believe and do the right will have gardens of Paradise as gift

خٰلِدِيْنَ فِيْهَا لَا يَبْغُوْنَ عَنْهَا حِوَلًا

khālidīna fīhā lā yabgụna 'an-hā ḥiwalā

Where they will abide for ever never wanting a change.

قُلْ لَّوْ كَانَ الْبَحْرُ مِدَادًا لِّكَلِمٰتِ رَبِّيْ لَنَفِدَ الْبَحْرُ قَبْلَ اَنْ تَنْفَدَ كَلِمٰتُ رَبِّيْ وَلَوْ جِئْنَا بِمِثْلِهٖ مَدَدًا

qul lau kānal-baḥru midādal likalimāti rabbī lanafidal-baḥru qabla an tanfada kalimātu rabbī walau ji`nā bimiṡlihī madadā

Say: "If the ocean turned to ink for writing down the colloquy of my Lord the ocean itself would be exhausted ere the words (and wonders) of my Lord come to end even if we brought another like it for replenishment."

قُلْ اِنَّمَآ اَنَا۠ بَشَرٌ مِّثْلُكُمْ يُوْحٰٓى اِلَيَّ اَنَّمَآ اِلٰهُكُمْ اِلٰهٌ وَّاحِدٌۚ فَمَنْ كَانَ يَرْجُوْا لِقَاۤءَ رَبِّهٖ فَلْيَعْمَلْ عَمَلًا صَالِحًا وَّلَا يُشْرِكْ بِعِبَادَةِ رَبِّهٖٓ اَحَدًا

qul innamā ana basyarum miṡlukum yụḥā ilayya annamā ilāhukum ilāhuw wāḥid, fa mang kāna yarjụ liqā`a rabbihī falya'mal 'amalan ṣāliḥaw wa lā yusyrik bi'ibādati rabbihī aḥadā

Say: "I am only a man like you but it has been communicated to me that your Lord is one and single God and that whosoever hopes to meet his Lord should do what is right and not associate any one in the worship of his Lord."
