waṣ-ṣāffāti ṣaffā
I CALL TO witness those who stand arrayed in rows
faz-zājirāti zajrā
And those who restrain by reprimanding
fat-tāliyāti żikrā
And those who recite the Reminder
inna ilāhakum lawāḥid
Verily your God is One
rabbus-samāwāti wal-arḍi wa mā bainahumā wa rabbul-masyāriq
The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that lies between them and the Lord of the Easts.
innā zayyannas-samā`ad-dun-yā bizīnatinil-kawākib
He decked the nearest heavens with ornaments of stars
wa ḥifẓam ming kulli syaiṭānim mārid
Protecting them against every wayward devil
lā yassamma'ụna ilal-mala`il-a'lā wa yuqżafụna ming kulli jānib
So that they are not able to listen to the angels of higher (echelons) and are pelted from all sides
duḥụraw wa lahum 'ażābuw wāṣib
And kept far away. There is perpetual punishment for them
illā man khaṭifal-khaṭfata fa atba'ahụ syihābun ṡāqib
Except those who eavesdrop and are pursued by a shooting flame.
fastaftihim a hum asyaddu khalqan am man khalaqnā, innā khalaqnāhum min ṭīnil lāzib
So ask them if they are more difficult to create or the rest We have created? Indeed (man) We created from fermented clay.
bal 'ajibta wa yaskharụn
Yet while you are filled with wonder they just scoff;
wa iżā żukkirụ lā yażkurụn
And when they are warned they pay no heed.
wa iżā ra`au āyatay yastaskhirụn
When they see a sign they laugh at it
wa qālū in hāżā illā siḥrum mubīn
And say: "This is only magic.
a iżā mitnā wa kunnā turābaw wa 'iẓāman a innā lamab'ụṡụn
When we are dead and turned to dust and bones how can we be raised again
a wa ābā`unal-awwalụn
And our fathers too?"
qul na'am wa antum dākhirụn
You say: "Yes; and you will be lowly made."
fa innamā hiya zajratuw wāḥidatun fa iżā hum yanẓurụn
There will only be a single jerk and they will gape
wa qālụ yā wailanā hāżā yaumud-dīn
And say: "Ah woe! This is the Day of Reckoning."
hāżā yaumul-faṣlillażī kuntum bihī tukażżibụn
"(Yes ) this is the Day of Judgement you had called a lie."
Gather all the wicked together and their comrades and those they had worshipped
min dụnillāhi fahdụhum ilā ṣirāṭil-jaḥīm
Other than God " (the angels will be told) "then show them the way to Hell
waqifụhum innahum mas`ụlụn
And detain them for they will be questioned."
mā lakum lā tanāṣarụn
"What is the matter with you that you do not help each other?"
bal humul-yauma mustaslimụn
They will submit to questioning then
wa aqbala ba'ḍuhum 'alā ba'ḍiy yatasā`alụn
And some of them will confront the others
qālū innakum kuntum ta`tụnanā 'anil-yamīn
Saying: "It were you who imposed yourselves upon us."
qālụ bal lam takụnụ mu`minīn
They will say: "No you were the ones who would not believe.
wa mā kāna lanā 'alaikum min sulṭān, bal kuntum qauman ṭāgīn
We had no power over you. In fact you were a people rebellious.
fa ḥaqqa 'alainā qaulu rabbinā innā lażā`iqụn
The sentence of our Lord has come TRUE for us. We have certainly to taste (the punishment)
fa agwainākum innā kunnā gāwīn
For we had led you astray. In fact we ourselves were astray."
fa innahum yauma`iżin fil-'ażābi musytarikụn
So they will become partners in punishment.
innā każālika naf'alu bil-mujrimīn
That is how We deal with sinners.
innahum kānū iżā qīla lahum lā ilāha illallāhu yastakbirụn
They were those who when it was said to them "There is no god but God " behaved with insolence
wa yaqụlụna a innā latārikū ālihatinā lisyā'irim majnụn
And said: "Should we abandon our gods for the sake of an insane poet?"
bal jā`a bil-ḥaqqi wa ṣaddaqal-mursalīn
Not in the least. He has brought the truth and confirmed the other messengers.
innakum lażā`iqul-'ażābil-alīm
You will indeed taste a painful punishment
wa mā tujzauna illā mā kuntum ta'malụn
And be rewarded but only for what you had done
illā 'ibādallāhil-mukhlaṣīn
Except the chosen creatures of God
ulā`ika lahum rizqum ma'lụm
Whose provision is predetermined --
fawākih, wa hum mukramụn
Fruits of every kind and they will be honoured
fī jannātin na'īm
In gardens of delight
'alā sururim mutaqābilīn
(Sitting) on couches face to face
yuṭāfu 'alaihim bika`sim mim ma'īn
With cups from a flowing stream being passed around
baiḍā`a lażżatil lisy-syāribīn
Clear delicious to drink
lā fīhā gauluw wa lā hum 'an-hā yunzafụn
Neither dulling the senses nor intoxicating
wa 'indahum qāṣirātuṭ-ṭarfi 'īn
And with them maidens of modest look and large lustrous eyes
ka`annahunna baiḍum maknụn
Like sheltered eggs in a nest.
fa aqbala ba'ḍuhum 'alā ba'ḍiy yatasā`alụn
Then one turned to the other in an enquiry.
qāla qā`ilum min-hum innī kāna lī qarīn
Said one of the speakers: "I had a friend
yaqụlu a innaka laminal-muṣaddiqīn
Who used to say: ´Are you one of those who can testify to the truth?
a iżā mitnā wa kunnā turābaw wa 'iẓāman a innā lamadīnụn
(Do you think) we would be paid back our due when we are dead and reduced to dust and bones?´
qāla hal antum muṭṭali'ụn
He said: ´Will you look down?´
faṭṭala'a fa ra`āhu fī sawā`il-jaḥīm
He looked down and saw (his friend) in the midst of Hell.
qāla tallāhi ing kitta laturdīn
´By God´ he said ´you had almost ruined me.
walau lā ni'matu rabbī lakuntu minal-muḥḍarīn
Had it not been for the grace of my Lord I too would have been there (in Hell).
a fa mā naḥnu bimayyitīn
(Another will say:)"Is it TRUE we are not going to die
illā mautatanal-ụlā wa mā naḥnu bimu'ażżabīn
Other than our first death and we shall not be punished?
inna hāżā lahuwal-fauzul-'aẓīm
This will indeed be great happiness.
limiṡli hāżā falya'malil-'āmilụn
For this the toilers should strive."
a żālika khairun nuzulan am syajaratuz-zaqqụm
Is this better or the tree of Zaqqum
innā ja'alnāhā fitnatal liẓ-ẓālimīn
Which We have reserved as punishment for evil-doers?
innahā syajaratun takhruju fī aṣlil-jaḥīm
It is a tree that grows at the bottom of Hell.
ṭal'uhā ka`annahụ ru`ụsusy-syayāṭīn
Its spathes are like the prickly pear.
fa innahum la`ākilụna min-hā famāli`ụna min-hal buṭụn
They will eat and fill their bellies with it
ṡumma inna lahum 'alaihā lasyaubam min ḥamīm
Washing it down with boiling water.
ṡumma inna marji'ahum la`ilal-jaḥīm
Then to Hell they will surely be returned.
innahum alfau ābā`ahum ḍāllīn
They had found their fathers astray
fa hum 'alā āṡārihim yuhra'ụn
Yet they hasten to follow in their footsteps.
wa laqad ḍalla qablahum akṡarul-awwalīn
So had many an earlier people gone astray
wa laqad arsalnā fīhim munżirīn
And We had sent admonishers to them.
fanẓur kaifa kāna 'āqibatul-munżarīn
Look then how was the end of those who had been warned
illā 'ibādallāhil-mukhlaṣīn
Other than the chosen creatures of God.
wa laqad nādānā nụḥun fa lani'mal-mujībụn
Noah had verily called to Us. And how gracious was He who answered (him).
wa najjaināhu wa ahlahụ minal-karbil-'aẓīm
We saved him and his family from the great affliction
wa ja'alnā żurriyyatahụ humul-bāqīn
And made his progeny survive
wa taraknā 'alaihi fil-ākhirīn
And left (his name) for posterity.
salāmun 'alā nụḥin fil-'ālamīn
Peace on Noah among all men.
innā każālika najzil-muḥsinīn
That is how We reward those who do good.
innahụ min 'ibādinal-mu`minīn
Surely he was among Our faithful creatures.
ṡumma agraqnal-ākharīn
Afterwards We drowned the others.
wa inna min syī'atihī la`ibrāhīm
And Abraham indeed was of his inducement
iż jā`a rabbahụ biqalbin salīm
When he came to his Lord with a heart compliant
iż qāla li`abīhi wa qaumihī māżā ta'budụn
When he said to his father and his people: "What is this you worship?
a ifkan āliḥatan dụnallāhi turīdụn
Why do you solicit FALSE gods instead of God?
fa mā ẓannukum birabbil-'ālamīn
What do you imagine the Lord of the worlds to be?"
fa naẓara naẓratan fin-nujụm
Then he looked up at the stars (they worshipped)
fa qāla innī saqīm
And said: "I am sick (of what you worship)!"
fa tawallau 'an-hu mudbirīn
But they turned their backs on him and went away.
fa rāga ilā ālihatihim fa qāla alā ta`kulụn
Then he turned towards their gods and said: "Why do you not eat (of these offerings)?
mā lakum lā tanṭiqụn
What is wrong with you that you do not speak?"
fa rāga 'alaihim ḍarbam bil-yamīn
Then he started striking them down with his right hand.
fa aqbalū ilaihi yaziffụn
So the people descended upon him.
qāla a ta'budụna mā tan-ḥitụn
"Why do you worship these you carve yourselves " he asked
wallāhu khalaqakum wa mā ta'malụn
"When God has created you and what you make?"
qālubnụ lahụ bun-yānan fa alqụhu fil-jaḥīm
"Build a pyre for him and throw him into the raging fire."
fa arādụ bihī kaidan fa ja'alnāhumul-asfalīn
So they contrived a plot against him but We made them abject.
wa qāla innī żāhibun ilā rabbī sayahdīn
And he said: "I am going away to my Lord who will show me the way.
rabbi hab lī minaṣ-ṣāliḥīn
(And he prayed:) "O Lord grant me a righteous son."
fa basysyarnāhu bigulāmin ḥalīm
So We gave him the good news of a clement son.
fa lammā balaga ma'ahus-sa'ya qāla yā bunayya innī arā fil-manāmi annī ażbaḥuka fanẓur māżā tarā, qāla yā abatif'al mā tu`maru satajidunī in syā`allāhu minaṣ-ṣābirīn
When he was old enough to go about with him he said: "O my son I dreamt that I was sacrificing you. Consider what you think?" He replied: "Father do as you are commanded. If God pleases you will find me firm."
fa lammā aslamā wa tallahụ lil-jabīn
When they submitted to the will of God and (Abraham) laid (his son) down prostrate on his temple
wa nādaināhu ay yā ibrāhīm
We called out: "O Abraham
qad ṣaddaqtar-ru`yā, innā każālika najzil-muḥsinīn
You have fulfilled your dream." Thus do We reward the good.
inna hāżā lahuwal-balā`ul mubīn
That was indeed a trying test.
wa fadaināhu biżib-ḥin 'aẓīm
So We ransomed him for a great sacrifice
wa taraknā 'alaihi fil-ākhirīn
And left (his hallowed memory) for posterity.
salāmun 'alā ibrāhīm
Peace be on Abraham.
każālika najzil-muḥsinīn
That is how We reward those who do good.
innahụ min 'ibādinal-mu`minīn
He is truly among Our faithful creatures.
wa basysyarnāhu bi`is-ḥāqa nabiyyam minaṣ-ṣāliḥīn
So We gave him the good news of Isaac apostle who is among the righteous.
wa bāraknā 'alaihi wa 'alā is-ḥāq, wa min żurriyyatihimā muḥsinuw wa ẓālimul linafsihī mubīn
And We blessed him and Isaac. Among their descendants are some who do good but some who wrong themselves.
wa laqad manannā 'alā mụsā wa hārụn
We were indeed gracious to Moses and Aaron
wa najjaināhumā wa qaumahumā minal-karbil-'aẓīm
And saved them and their people from great distress
wa naṣarnāhum fa kānụ humul-gālibīn
And helped them so they were victorious.
wa ātaināhumal-kitābal-mustabīn
We gave them the explicit Book
wa hadaināhumaṣ-ṣirāṭal-mustaqīm
And showed them the straight path
wa taraknā 'alaihimā fil-ākhirīn
And left (their remembrance) for posterity.
salāmun 'alā mụsā wa hārụn
Peace be on Moses and Aaron.
innā każālika najzil-muḥsinīn
That is how We reward those who do good.
innahumā min 'ibādinal-mu`minīn
They are among Our faithful devotees.
wa inna ilyāsa laminal-mursalīn
Verily Elias is one of the apostles.
iż qāla liqaumihī alā tattaqụn
When he said to his people: "Will you not be mindful of God?
a tad'ụna ba'law wa tażarụna aḥsanal-khāliqīn
Would you call on Baal and leave the best of creators
allāha rabbakum wa rabba ābā`ikumul-awwalīn
God your Lord and the Lord of your fathers?"
fa każżabụhu fa innahum lamuḥḍarụn
They denied him and will surely be brought to punishment
illā 'ibādallāhil-mukhlaṣīn
Except the chosen creatures of God.
wa taraknā 'alaihi fil-ākhirīn
And We left his (memory) for posterity.
salāmun 'alā ilyāsīn
Peace be on Elias.
innā każālika najzil-muḥsinīn
That is how We reward those who do good.
innahụ min 'ibādinal-mu`minīn
He is truly among Our faithful devotees.
wa inna lụṭal laminal-mursalīn
Verily Lot was one of the apostles
iż najjaināhu wa ahlahū ajma'īn
Wherefore We saved him and his entire family
illā 'ajụzan fil-gābirīn
Except an old woman who was one of those who stayed behind.
ṡumma dammarnal-ākharīn
Then We destroyed the others.
wa innakum latamurrụna 'alaihim muṣbiḥīn
You pass by (their habitations) in the morning
wa bil-laīl, a fa lā ta'qilụn
Or at night. Then how is it you do not understand?
wa inna yụnusa laminal-mursalīn
Verily Jonah is one of the apostles.
iż abaqa ilal-fulkil-masy-ḥụn
When he fled on the laden ship
fa sāhama fa kāna minal-mud-ḥaḍīn
And lots were cast (when a storm overtook them) he was rejected (and thrown overboard).
faltaqamahul-ḥụtu wa huwa mulīm
Then he was swallowed by a large fish as he was worthy of blame.
falau lā annahụ kāna minal-musabbiḥīn
Had he not been one of those who struggled hard
lalabiṡa fī baṭnihī ilā yaumi yub'aṡụn
He would have stayed in its belly till the day the dead are raised.
fa nabażnāhu bil-'arā`i wa huwa saqīm
So We cast him sick on a barren shore
wa ambatnā 'alaihi syajaratam miy yaqṭīn
And We made a gourd tree grow over him.
We sent him to a hundred thousand men or more
fa āmanụ fa matta'nāhum ilā ḥīn
And they came to believe; so We allowed them to enjoy the good things of life for an age.
fastaftihim a lirabbikal-banātu wa lahumul-banụn
Now ask them if their Lord has daughters and they sons?
am khalaqnal-malā`ikata ināṡaw wa hum syāhidụn
Or did We make the angels females and they witnessed it?
alā innahum min ifkihim layaqụlụn
Is it not a lie invented by them when they say:
waladallāhu wa innahum lakāżibụn
"God has begotten (children)?" They are liars indeed!
aṣṭafal-banāti 'alal-banīn
Does He prefer sons to daughters?
mā lakum, kaifa taḥkumụn
What ails you that you judge in such a wise?
a fa lā tażakkarụn
Why do you not reflect?
am lakum sulṭānum mubīn
Or have you received some clear authority?
fa`tụ bikitābikum ing kuntum ṣādiqīn
Then bring your scripture if what you say is true.
wa ja'alụ bainahụ wa bainal-jinnati nasabā, wa laqad 'alimatil-jinnatu innahum lamuḥḍarụn
They link Him with jinns by lineage yet the jinns know they will be brought before Him.
sub-ḥanallāhi 'ammā yaṣifụn
God is too glorious for what they ascribe to Him
illā 'ibādallāhil-mukhlaṣīn
Except His chosen creatures who do not.
fa innakum wa mā ta'budụn
So neither you nor those you worship
mā antum 'alaihi bifātinīn
Can mislead anyone away from Him
illā man huwa ṣālil-jaḥīm
Except one who is (destined) to burn in Hell.
wa mā minnā illā lahụ maqāmum ma'lụm
"There is not one of us who does not have his appointed place " (declare the angels.)
wa innā lanaḥnuṣ-ṣāffụn
"And we are truly those who stand in rows
wa innā lanaḥnul-musabbiḥụn
And we are those who sing hallelujas to Him."
wa ing kānụ layaqụlụn
They used to say:
lau anna 'indanā żikram minal-awwalīn
If we had the account of earlier people with us
lakunnā 'ibādallāhil-mukhlaṣīn
We would have been the chosen creatures of God."
fa kafarụ bih, fa saufa ya'lamụn
Yet now (that it has come) they refuse to believe in it; but they will come to know soon.
wa laqad sabaqat kalimatunā li'ibādinal-mursalīn
Our word had already been given before to Our votaries the apostles --
innahum lahumul-manṣụrụn
That they would be helped
wa inna jundanā lahumul-gālibụn
And that certainly Our armies will be victorious.
fa tawalla 'an-hum ḥattā ḥīn
So you ignore them for a time
wa abṣir-hum, fa saufa yubṣirụn
And wait; they will come to know soon.
a fa bi'ażābinā yasta'jilụn
Do they want to hasten Our punishment?
fa iżā nazala bisāḥatihim fa sā`a ṣabāḥul-munżarīn
When it comes down on their plains it will be an evil dawn for those who had been warned.
wa tawalla 'an-hum ḥattā ḥīn
So turn away from them for a time
wa abṣir, fa saufa yubṣirụn
And watch; they will come to know soon.
sub-ḥāna rabbika rabbil-'izzati 'ammā yaṣifụn
Too glorious is your Lord the Lord of power for what they ascribe to Him.
wa salāmun 'alal-mursalīn
So peace be on the messengers
wal-ḥamdu lillāhi rabbil-'ālamīn
And all praise to God the Lord of all the worlds.
